Traveling for many people including myself is an essential need ! Discovering new landscapes, new cultures and people brings us this excitement and joy that takes us out of our daily lives 😊.

There are all kinds of travelers, here are 5 types that I have personally been around 😅

  • the nonchalant : who will not prepare anything and leave the good progress of the trip in the hands of…destiny !
  • the over-prepared : who plan the smallest details and don’t deviate from their itinerary.
  • the followers : who will let you prepare and follow everything without saying anything.
  • the social media addicts: who travel only to feed their social media. And finally…
  • the balanced ones: they organize their trip, but are also able to deviate from their itinerary.

Everyone travels in their own way, but there are some important steps to follow when organizing your trip. This will allow you to get the most out of your trip and make the experience much more enjoyable and memorable.

Choice of the destination

It all starts with choosing our destination. Some more adventurous travelers might want to select a random destination on the globe 🌍 ! This can be fun, but it should be noted that it’s not possible to travel everywhere at any time of the year.

Here are a few things to check before choosing your destination:

  • Your budget 💰

It goes without saying that you should choose your destination based on your financial situation. Do some research to determine the average cost of airfare and expenses at the destination. That way you won’t be surprised and neither will your credit card!

  • Duration of stay 📅

The number of days you can afford to travel can have an impact on your choice of destination. Some destinations may require a minimum of 2 weeks to see all the attractions. Others take you almost 2 days of transportation to get there.

That’s why it’s important to choose your destination according to the time you have available. You don’t want to run around like headless chickens for lack of time.

  • Seasons to travel to destination ⛈🌫

Some destinations are to be avoided depending on the season. It is always better to validate the temperature that will be waiting for you and the risks of natural disasters (hurricanes, tropical storms…).

In addition, for some destinations airline tickets can be more expensive depending on the season.

  • Political and health situation and religious holidays

Always check travel advisories, the news and even social media. Some destinations, regions or roads may be closed or not recommended for tourists. As for religious holidays, depending on the destination, some places or attractions may be closed.

  • Entry requirements ✋🏻👮🏻‍♂️

It is important to check if there are any entry requirements for the chosen destination. The country may require a visa, a vaccine (ex: yellow fever) or a passport valid for at least 6 months after the return date.

Flight ticket booking

If you already know the duration and dates of your stay you can book your flight tickets. If this is still unclear, move on to the next step which is planning your itinerary. This may help you make a decision.

For booking your tickets, start by comparing booking sites. You can help yourself with a flight comparison tool like Skyscanner.

You can choose your tickets based on price, schedule (departure and arrival times) and number of stopovers.

Depending on the destination and the length of your stay, it can be very important to plan your itinerary. If you choose a destination with a large area or with plenty of attractions, it is best to make sure your days are well planned.

This is the longest part, but also the most important. You don’t have to do it in one evening and try to have fun planning, after all it is your vacation 😄!

1. Do some research on things to see and do at your destination. You can find articles, blogs, videos and even visit the area’s tourism website. You can also ask around to friends and family who have already visited the destination!

2. It can be very helpful to know the distances between places you want to visit at destination. This can give you an indication if it is necessary to rent a car, otherwise to know the train or bus routes. For this you can use google map or applications like

3. Personally, i like to put the details of my itinerary in a calendar. It helps me to be more organized and make better decisions. I can also put essential details such as schedules, travel times and costs.

4. Planning your itinerary can also guide you in choosing restaurants, grocery stores, stores and accommodations.

Reserve your accommodation

You can book your accommodation during the planning of your itinerary or at the end of it. I strongly advise booking your accommodation(s) in advance.

It is possible to do it on the spot, but keep in mind that you are not guaranteed of the dipsonibility. You may spend some time finding an available room and it may not be pleasant after a long flight or day.

When you book before you leave, you have the chance to compare rates and read reviews on accommodations. Also, if you are going during high season, it is important to book in advance.

You can choose to book hotels, apartments, hostels or B&B. It all depends on the advice you find on the internet, availability and of course your preferences (swimming pool, spa, proximity to the city or airport, breakfast included, cancellation option, allows pets…)

Car rental

Renting a car is not necessary for all destinations. However, if you plan to do a lot of driving or choose a destination with a large territory it is a good investment!

Before booking a car, you should know that to drive in some countries you must have an International Driving Permit in addition to your driver’s license. You must have both in your possession at your destination.

To choose your vehicle, you can first consider the type of vehicle you will need. Do you need to carry a lot of luggage…travel on winding roads…or drive only in the city ?

You can then compare prices and inclusions with sites such as or research the best rental companies at your destination.

Be careful, here are some points to validate before renting a car: is the mileage unlimited ? is a 2nd driver included ? does the vehicle have to be returned with a full tank of gas ? is cancellation free ?

Before taking out full coverage insurance with the rental agency, ask your insurer or credit card issuer about your coverage.

Excursions & activities booking

Before booking an excursion or activity, it is always recommended to inquire about the conditions or requirements. The requirements may not be suitable for you (physical effort, location…)

Once you have made your list of excursion or activity, it is recommended to make the reservation in advance. This is to avoid long lines or running out of available place. In some cases, booking in advance online is cheaper.

Be sure to read through the different ticket options to choose what is right for you. This is also the time to check the days and hours of operation. Some tours or activities may not be available depending on the season or for other reasons such as renovations.

Travel insurance

It is important to make sure that you are well covered before going abroad. This prevents us from finding ourselves in tricky and unpleasant situations, such as paying astronomical sums in the event of hospitalization.

If you have personal insurance, with your employer or credit card issuer, find out about your coverage. Spare no questions or details!

If you don’t have insurance or your coverage is not complete, shop around to different insurers and compare packages.

What your insurance should ideally include: health insurance, baggage or personal effects insurance, cancellation insurance, assistance and repatriation.

Don’t forget to send your itinerary to your friends and family ! We never know what can happen at destinaton !
